Tai Chi Chuan, "The Supreme Ultimate", is an ancient martial and healing art. It is a discipline of the Spirit, Mind, and Body that originated in China hundreds of years ago. Founded on three basic principles of breath control, mind focus, and body movement, Tai Chi enhances the practioner's well being through slow, graceful movements. Although Tai Chi is a powerful martial art practiced for self-defense, it is equally beneficial for the health of the body, clarity and peace of mind, and the development and movement of vital life-force energy (Chi). It is through the flowing, natural movements of Tai Chi that we may maximize health, reduce stress, and harmonize our spirit, mind, and body.

Carol Brecker
Ikebana Flower Arranging

Carol Brecker holds the third teaching diploma from the Sogetsu School of Ikebana. The Sogetso School is a modern approach to Ikebana that promotes flower arranging by anyone in any place using any materials.

Sensei Carol has studied Ikebana since 2000 and is a regular exhibitor at the Phoenix Art Museum Ikebana Exhibit and Arts and Flowers. Her teaching encourages free expression, joy, discovery, and union with nature.

She believes that ikebana is a healing art that can calm the soul, focus the mind, connect the spirit with nature, and create an avenue for personal expression. Her classes are taught free of charge and her students are encouraged to participate in programs that benefit the community.

Sensei Carol is a founder and officer of the Sonoran Desert Sogetsu Study Group and a long time member and officer of Ikebana of Arizona. She is a Master Gardener and takes her students into her extensive gardens to learn about growing, preserving, and arranging materials that can be cultivated in the desert climate.

Ikebana
Ikebana, the art of Japanese Flower Arranging, is the creative display of natural materials with attention to the harmony of line, color, space and dimension. Ikebana, literally “living flowers,” is an ancient art. Said to have begun in China, flower arranging arrived in Japan with the introduction of Buddhism in the 6th century. Over centuries, the art form shed its religious mantle and came to be practiced by people from many levels of society. The strict rules and prescribed formal techniques that are a hallmark of most Japanese art forms serve as the foundation for the symbolic meanings inherent in ikebana, such as the unity of opposites and, ultimately, the harmonious balance between heaven, earth and humanity. Unlike western-style floral arrangements, characterized by volume, color and complexity, ikebana embraces the spare, poetic beauty of line.

Music
Music has been called the universal language. It acts as a playground for the soul. It engages the mind and the soul simultaneously and is a vital part of the human condition. Its power knows no boundary of age, gender, social status or race, and can in fact break down such barriers to communication and understanding.

Chamber music holds a unique place in musical communication. Like conversation, each instrument can speak alone, participate in playful banter, or unite with the other voices. But each voice stands individually, expressing its role in its own unique way. Cultivating this style of communication can be rewarding as a musician and helpful in understanding relationships we approach verbally.

At the Recreative Art Center, monthly chamber music sessions consist of performing, reading, and coaching in the best sense of the word. Open communication between members and emphasis on listening is vital to the process. Understanding the language within the music to better express it and expanding participants' understanding of musical communication utilizes the piece at hand to apply greater concepts.

Stefanie Neuburger
Yoga

Stefanie teaches Hatha Yoga classes that have been influenced by Anusara Yoga and Life Force Yoga. Her greatest hope is for her students to be able to dance through life with joy and self-confidence.

Stefanie practiced yoga with her grandfather from the early age of 5. Some of the poses stayed with her until she was formally introduced to yoga in 1997, looking for a way to work through panic attacks and anxiety. Immediately drawn to the strengthening, balancing and calming experiences, she completed the Desert Song Teacher Training in 2007. She continues her personal and professional education with a focus on safety and emotional effects of yoga. In class, Stefanie creates a safe container, where students are encouraged to find their own practice through poses, breath, meditation and self-inquiry. Stefanie is a Life Force Yoga I Practitioner.

Yoga
Yoga means union of the body, mind and spirit. This 5000 year old Indian science cultivates stillness through poses, breathing and meditation.

Yoga at the Recreative Art Center is for all levels and all ages. If you have always wanted to try yoga but don’t feel you are flexible enough, think again! With yoga you gently learn to increase your strength and mobility over time, while working on techniques to help you relax and focus.
